Labeling Considerations

Because cannabis and CBD are consumable products, There are certain rules regarding how they are sold and what the packaging needs to include. Please note, laws vary by state for both medicinal and recreational cannabis. Besides the basic date, weight, ingredients, and manufacturer, here are some labeling considerations:

  • Track and Trace & RFID

Your customer may choose to differentiate themselves by adding features that increase trust among consumers. Track and trace technology monitors cannabis along the entire supply chain: from growth to sale. In a world where product misrepresentation and counterfeits are a potentially life-threatening risk, this is an in-demand added service. RFID streamlines track and trace capabilities by quickly and accurately monitoring operations, proving chain-of-custody transactions, and eliminating manual processes.

    Prop 65

In California, Prop 65 labeling appears on many household and consumable products. If a product has some evidence of causing cancer, it must include the warning. Therefore, California requires Prop 65 labels on cannabis product.

  • Directions for Use

Depending on the state, there are different requirements regarding the directions for use and the total estimated THC in the labeled product. Along with that are possible warnings. For instance, Alaska requires three warning statements. One reads: "Marijuana has intoxicating effects and may be habit forming and addictive."

    Symbols & Type

Many states have their own special symbols required on all cannabis products. Oregon, for example, has labels that differentiate hemp products (such as CBD) for cannabis (which contains THC). In some cases, type size is stipulated
